Appreciation shown by the Supreme Court of India
1. "Shri. M.C. Mehta has been rendering yeoman services to the public cause of removal and prevention of pollution of river Ganga. He deserves our commendation --". Supreme Court order dated September 11, 1990, 'Ganges case')
2. "The Petitioner has rendered signal service to the community by bringing this public interest litigation. He has produced before the Court considerable material bearing on the issues arising in the litigation. He argued his case with great sincerity and dedication and the people of Delhi must be grateful to him for espousing such a public cause though lone and single he fought a valiant battle against a mighty enterprise and achieved substantial success. We would, therefore, as a token of out appreciation of the work done by the Petitioner direct that a sum of Rs. 10,000/- be paid by Shriram to the Petitioner by way of costs". (Judgement dated 17.2.1986 Delhi Gas Leak case).
3. "Mr. M.C. Mehta, who has filed this petition, which is in nature of public interest litigation, has spent a lot of money over the case and in addition he has devoted plenty of precious time over this case. Having regard to the quantum of work he has done in this case, we feel that he should be duly remunerated because it is only due to his efforts this Court has been able to investigate into the appalling condition prevailing in and around the river Ganga. We, therefore, direct a sum of Rs. 10, 000/- shall be paid by Union of India Ministry of Environment to Shri. M. C. Mehta within one week from today." (Supreme Court decision dated 9.12.1987).
4. "We are, therefore, thankful to Mr. Mehta for having brought this matter before the Court receiving judicial consideration". (Order dated 31.10.1990, in the Sivakasi Match and Fire Cracker Industry case where thousands of children were suffering from occupational hazards and pollution.).
5. "Mr. Mehta, who is a pioneer in the field of environmental law and one of the lawyers who has virtually dedicated himself to this cause, deserves to be commended for the persistence with which is admirable to say the least. Almost every environment matter of any significance is one with which Mr. Mehta has been associated." (Judgement dated June 29, 1994, High Court of Bombay, 'Bayer India vs. The State of Maharashtra).
